Sample of 3 wines
1. Hill-Smith Estate Eden Valley Chardonnay 2013 – $18 at Jim’s Cellars. Wild yeast fermented and matured in new and not so new French oak barriques. Aromas of white peaches and cashew mingle with hints of biscuits and nutmeal. This is classy chardy with a creamy texture, elegant but not short on interesting flavour. A steal at this price, and we preferred it to its dearer sibling from the Adelaide Hills. 94 points.
2. Yalumba The Scribbler Cabernet Shiraz 2012 – $17 at Winestar. Lots of bright red and blue fruits and layers of flavour in a smooth, elegant package. The wine seemed to put on weight after a day in the open bottle. Just 13.5% but enough flavour here for sure. Terrific red for the money. 94 points. Campbell Mattinson at the Winefront gives it 95.
3. Brown Brothers Pinot Chardonnay Meunier NV – $18 at WSD. The best bubbly under $20 and the least well known. 92 points.
